Mood swings are beginning to seem like the norm. We live in a world where it’s almost impossible to go without our mobile phones, tablets and T.V’s. But it IS important to unplug and disconnect from the cyber world for a few hours a day, especially for the first hour in the morning and before bed. 

Studies have proven that people who are disciplined with their screen time tend to sleep better and feel less anxious than those who set no boundaries. Instead of scrolling through social media during these times take the time to read a book, go for a walk, play a board game with a partner or roommate, learn to enjoy the now. 

Go to bed early

Good mood from good nights sleep. As soon as the sun goes down our bodies start producing melatonin known as the sleep hormone. So don’t fight your bodies natural urges to want to rest when the sun goes down. It’s important for our bodies to get enough rest to improve our overall health. The best way to do that is to get in the habit of putting yourself to bed by at least 9pm.  

Move your body

We all know that exercise is important for our health. I understand that not everyone enjoys exercising at their local gym but you don’t have to be a gym junkie to gain the benefits from exercise. For example if you have a desk job, on your lunch break try going for a brisk walk around the block. 

You could also try parking further away from the office and walking to and from work… Don’t drive? try getting off one or two stops earlier on your bus/train commute and walking the additional distance to your destination. If you start thinking outside the box, you’ll find ways to get moving more. Remember, if you don’t use it, you lose it!

Listen to how you feel

Good mood from good nights sleep. It’s important to be mindful of our thoughts and feelings everyday. If you notice you often feel stressed, anxious, depressed, sad, or overwhelmed – that’s your body sending a message that you need to change something. Find someone to talk to – a problem shared is a problem halved. Eliminate toxic people from your life. 

Stop negative thinking – try meditating, at least once a day for at least 10 minutes. With google these days there are no excuses. There are literally hundreds of tutorials for beginners just waiting for you. Trust me, if you can develop a habit of meditating everyday you will feel a lot more relaxed. Making healthy food choices

Healthy, clean food.

The best way to start making healthier food choices is to start substituting food. For example; if you’re craving chocolate substitute it for a piece of fruit. You will trick your body into thinking it’s following old habits and you will still get the sugar it’s craving but you’ll also get the nutrition from the raw food. If you feel like you’re hungry, drink a glass of water, wait 5 minutes and if the hunger pains subside then you were probable just thirsty. 

Another hit tip is to invest in an air fryer – you’ll still be able to enjoy the crunchy chips you love but, without all of the oils that come with traditional frying in oil.
