Can I Use Earthing & Grounding Sheets With an Electric Blanket? Yes!
Can I Use Earthing & Grounding Sheets With an Electric Blanket? Yes!
When winter rolls around and the nights get colder, it’s tempting to crank up the electric blanket and snuggle in. But if you’re someone who uses grounding or earthing sheets from Urban Hippee, you might be wondering: can I still ground while using an electric blanket? The short answer is yes — but there are a few important things to consider.
What Are Grounding Sheets and How Do They Work?
Grounding (or earthing) sheets connect you to the Earth’s natural electric charge by plugging into the grounding port (earth pin) of your power outlet. At Urban Hippee, our grounding sheets and underlays use conductive materials like stainless steel fibres woven into the fabric to allow this connection. When you lie on the sheet or underlay, your body absorbs electrons from the Earth, which may help reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and support overall well-being.

Are Electric Blankets Safe to Use With Grounding Sheets?

Yes — you can use an electric blanket along with your Urban Hippee grounding sheet, but safety comes first. Electric blankets are active electrical devices that generate heat by running current through wires. Our grounding products, on the other hand, are passive and only connect to the earth port without drawing any current.
Because of this, the two systems can coexist, provided the electric blanket is in good working condition and plugged into a properly wired and grounded outlet. There should be no exposed wiring or faulty plugs. The grounding sheet will still provide benefit, though the placement of the blanket in relation to the sheet will affect how well your body maintains contact with the grounding surface.
Best Way to Layer the Electric Blanket and Grounding Sheet
We recommend placing the electric blanket underneath your grounding underlay sheet, not on top. Here’s why:
If your grounding sheet is under the electric blanket, your body is not making direct contact with the conductive surface.
Our grounding underlays are designed to go directly on top of your mattress, underneath your fitted sheet or sleepwear. This ensures the grounding effect still occurs through slight contact or even through thin layers like cotton pyjamas.
So the correct order from bottom to top should be:
Mattress
Electric blanket
Urban Hippee grounding underlay sheet
Fitted sheet
You
This setup keeps the grounding connection uninterrupted while still allowing the warmth of the electric blanket to pass through.

Can Grounding Sheets Withstand the Heat from an Electric Blanket?
Urban Hippee’s grounding sheets and underlay mats are made with durable materials, including stainless steel fibres that can handle regular use. The temperature of a typical electric blanket is designed for body comfort and is not high enough to cause damage to the grounding sheet or mat. However, prolonged direct contact with any high-temperature device might reduce the lifespan of any bedding, grounding or not. That said, most users run their electric blankets on a moderate setting to pre-warm the bed, then switch them off before sleeping. This is a smart habit regardless, as constant overnight use of electric blankets has raised some concerns over long-term EMF exposure.
Do Electric Blankets Emit EMFs?
Yes, electric blankets do emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) because they operate using alternating current (AC) power. These EMFs are typically low to moderate but can be present constantly while the blanket is plugged in and turned on. For those who are health-conscious or EMF-sensitive, this could be a concern over time.
The good news is that grounding can help neutralise some of the effects of EMFs by allowing excess electrical charge to safely dissipate into the Earth. That said, we still recommend using your electric blanket to pre-warm your bed, then unplugging it before sleep. This reduces your EMF exposure overnight while allowing your grounding sheet to do its job effectively.

Will the Electric Blanket Interfere with the Grounding Benefits?
Not directly, no. As long as your grounding cord is connected to a properly grounded outlet, and your body is making contact with the conductive fabric, the electrons will still flow. What matters most is skin contact or minimal interference between your body and the grounding material.
Thicker layers or synthetic bedding between you and the underlay can reduce effectiveness. That’s why we designed our underlay sheets to be placed right under your fitted sheet, allowing conductivity even through light sleepwear.

Additional Tips for Using Grounding Sheets and Electric Blankets Together
Test your setup. Use our multimeters to make sure your sheet is properly grounded. This gives you peace of mind, especially when combining devices.
Pre-warm, then unplug. Heat the bed before getting in, then switch off the electric blanket to minimise EMF exposure.
Avoid overlap. Never place the electric blanket on top of your grounding sheet. Not only does this reduce effectiveness, it may cause wear over time.
Use low to medium heat. Extreme heat isn’t necessary and may wear out both products sooner.
Can You Use Other Heated Products Like Heat Packs or Mattress Pads?
Yes, but with the same precautions. A microwaveable heat pack or hot water bottle is fine to use with your grounding sheet, as it doesn’t carry electricity. For heated mattress pads, the same layering advice applies: grounding underlay goes on top of the heated device.
If you’re ever unsure, test your setup with a continuity tester to confirm you’re still grounded while using your heated accessory.

Should You Even Be Using an Electric Blanket?
We get it — winters can be rough, especially in cooler parts of Australia. But there are reasons some people move away from electric blankets over time. From a grounding perspective, more natural heat-retaining options like flannel sheets, wool mattress toppers, or warm grounding-compatible duvets may offer a better long-term solution without extra EMF exposure.
Grounded and Toasty Can Go Together
You don’t have to choose between staying warm and staying grounded. By layering correctly, using your electric blanket wisely, and making sure your outlet is safely grounded, you can enjoy all the grounding benefits Urban Hippee sheets have to offer — without freezing your toes off.
