Can You Do Too Much Grounding or Earthing?

Can You Do Too Much Grounding or Earthing?

In our fast-paced, overstimulated world, grounding (also known as earthing) has gained serious traction as a simple, natural way to reconnect to the Earth — literally. By walking barefoot outside or using earthing sheets, mats, or underlays indoors, you’re tapping into the Earth’s natural electric field.

But while the benefits sound almost too good to be true, many people ask a valid question:
Can you actually do too much grounding? Could there be side effects from connecting to the Earth too often?

Let’s break it down.

How Grounding Works (Without the Hippy Woo)

Grounding allows your body to receive a steady flow of electrons from the Earth’s surface. These free electrons act as antioxidants, helping to neutralize free radicals and reduce excess positive electrical charge built up from daily life — especially from artificial lighting, EMFs, rubber-soled shoes, and screens.

Studies have shown grounding helps:

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Improve sleep

  • Lower cortisol

  • Support HRV and blood flow

  • Speed up wound healing

  • Ease muscle soreness and joint pain

One peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that earthing the human body can influence blood viscosity, cortisol levels, sleep, and pain relief. The researchers concluded that grounding appears to be a safe and easily accessible strategy to reduce chronic inflammation and support overall health. Read the full study here.

Can You “Overdo” Grounding?

Short answer: No — grounding is self-regulating.

There is no known dose at which grounding becomes harmful. The body doesn’t “store” excess electrons, and there’s no danger of overdosing. Once your electrical balance is restored, the Earth simply continues supplying support without overstimulation.

It’s kind of like sleeping — your body takes what it needs and resets. That’s why some people sleep grounded every night and use mats or underlays during the day, too.

This idea is echoed in multiple grounding studies, including those published in PubMed, which showed no negative physiological response from prolonged grounding sessions — only benefits.

But Some People Do Feel “Weird” at First

While grounding itself isn’t harmful, some people feel strange or even uncomfortable when they first begin. This isn’t a sign of overuse — it’s typically a transitional reaction as your nervous system adjusts.

Common experiences:

  • Feeling drowsy or sluggish

  • Slight headache

  • Tingly skin

  • Restless sleep or vivid dreams

  • Detox-like symptoms (nausea, skin breakouts, irritability)

This is more common in people who are very inflamed, chronically stressed, or surrounded by lots of electromagnetic noise. It usually fades after a few days or a week.

The Role of Hydration & Minerals

Your body is mostly water — but for electrons to flow properly, that water needs to be conductive. Low levels of magnesium, potassium, or salt can affect how grounding feels.

Staying well-hydrated and eating mineral-rich foods helps maximise your grounding benefits. If you’re using grounding sheets regularly and still feel off, adding a pinch of natural salt to your water or eating more greens and bananas could help.

Can Grounding Interact With EMFs?

This is a key area where issues happen, especially indoors.

When you’re grounded in an environment with lots of electrical noise — from Wi-Fi routers, powerboards, chargers, TVs, and LED lights — those EMFs can influence your grounded body’s surface voltage.

Some people feel:

  • Static electricity discharges

  • Small zaps

  • Buzzing when touching devices

  • Heat or tingling

This doesn’t mean the mat is “faulty.” It means you’re grounded in a dirty electrical environment, and you’re now acting like an antenna between the Earth and your room’s EMF load.

How to Minimise EMF Interference

Testing for dirty electricity to help grounding and earthing mat to work better.

  • Plug your mat into a properly grounded outlet — test it with a socket tester

  • Turn off electronics not in use nearby

  • Move powerboards and routers away from the mat or bed

  • Don’t run extension leads under your mattress or chair

  • Wear natural fibres — synthetics build up static

What About Sleeping Grounded All Night?

This is one of the best ways to ground — and there’s zero evidence that it’s harmful long-term.

You’re still, relaxed, and grounded for 6–8 hours. This is ideal for:

  • Deep nervous system repair

  • Restoring circadian rhythm

  • Reducing morning inflammation and stiffness

Most of our customers sleep grounded 365 nights a year. If you’re sensitive, you can ease in by grounding every second night, but most people adapt within a few days.

Still Feeling Uncomfortable?

Can't sleep on a earthing and grounding bed sheet.

If grounding still feels off:

  • Try removing metal furniture or synthetic materials nearby

  • Avoid layering thick blankets or plastic covers over the sheet

  • Try moving the mat to a different plug

  • Use a multimeter to test your body’s voltage drop

Who Should Ease Into Grounding?

You’re unlikely to harm yourself by grounding daily, but some people may prefer a slower approach:

  • EMF-sensitive individuals

  • Anyone with a pacemaker (always consult your doctor)

  • People on blood thinners or with electrical implants

  • Those going through major detox or fasting protocols

For most people, daily use is not only safe — it’s life-changing.

Grounding FAQs (Myth-Busting)

Q: Can you absorb too many electrons?
A: No — your body only takes what it needs. You can’t “overfill.”

Q: Will it interfere with my medications or medical devices?
A: Generally, no — but if you’re using a pacemaker or advanced electrical implant, check with your doctor first.

Q: Can grounding be dangerous around electronics?
A: Not dangerous, but the setup matters. Always ensure you’re plugged into a properly grounded outlet to avoid EMF disturbances.

Q: Is it better to be grounded for a little or a lot?
A: The more, the better — especially during sleep and while at your desk.

You Can’t Do Too Much — But You Can Do It Wrong

Grounding is one of the few wellness practices with no known risk of overuse. But if your setup is poor, your environment is overloaded with EMFs, or you’re not well hydrated, you might not get the full benefit — or you might feel a little weird at first.

That’s not grounding being harmful — that’s your body adjusting or your environment needing a tweak.

So no, you can’t do too much. But you can do it better.

Start slow, stay hydrated, and create a supportive space — and you’ll be well on your way to sleeping deeper, recovering faster, and feeling more grounded than ever.
