How to Use a Grounding Sheet Properly
Where it goes, what bedding you can use, whether pyjamas are fine, and the common setup questions answered.
Grounding sheets are simple to use, but getting the setup right matters. The good news is you usually don't need to change your normal bedding, sleep directly on the grounding material, or stop wearing pyjamas.
If you're using an underlay-style grounding sheet, the setup is straightforward: place it on the mattress, put your normal fitted sheet over the top, connect the grounding cord, and sleep as usual.
Your regular fitted sheet goes directly over the grounding underlay.
You don't need constant bare-skin contact while you sleep.
Place the electric blanket underneath the grounding underlay.
Keep thick waterproof or padded layers underneath the grounding product.
Where Does a Grounding Sheet Go on the Bed?
If you're using an Urban Hippee Premium Grounding Underlay, place it directly on top of your mattress and secure it in position using the adjustable straps.
Your normal fitted sheet then goes directly over the grounding underlay.
The Simplest Setup
Can a Grounding Sheet Work Through a Normal Bed Sheet?
Yes. Our Premium Grounding Underlays are specifically designed to sit underneath a normal fitted or flat sheet.
You don't need to buy special bedding or sleep directly on the conductive material. Cotton, bamboo, flannelette, silk and wool sheets can all be used over the underlay.
Place your fitted sheet over the grounding underlay and sleep as usual.
Do You Need Bare Skin Contact?
No. Bare skin contact isn't required when using our Premium Grounding Underlay.
Because the underlay is designed to work beneath your fitted sheet, you can use your normal bedding and sleepwear rather than sleeping directly on the conductive material.
This is one of the main reasons many people prefer an underlay-style grounding sheet: once it's set up, you can continue sleeping exactly as you normally would.
Can You Wear Pyjamas While Grounding?
Yes. Normal pyjamas and light sleepwear are fine when using an underlay-style grounding product.
You don't need to worry about keeping a bare arm or leg in contact with the sheet throughout the night.
Can You Use a Mattress Protector or Mattress Topper?
This is where the order of your bedding becomes important.
We don't recommend placing a thick mattress protector, waterproof protector, padded topper or heavy underlay between you and the grounding product. These thicker layers can reduce conductivity.
If you want to keep using one, place it underneath the grounding underlay.

Can You Use an Electric Blanket With a Grounding Sheet?
Yes. You can still use an electric blanket with a grounding underlay.
The electric blanket should sit underneath the grounding underlay so that the conductive layer remains closer to your body.
Electric Blanket Setup
This keeps the grounding layer closer to you while still allowing the warmth from your electric blanket to pass through.
Does the Type of Bed Sheet Matter?
Generally, no.
Cotton, bamboo, flannelette, silk and wool bedding can all be used over our Premium Grounding Underlay.
The important thing is not the fabric type — it's avoiding thick padded or waterproof layers between your body and the grounding product.
How Do You Connect a Grounding Sheet?
Connect the supplied grounding cord to the connection point on the underlay, then connect the other end to the supplied grounding adapter.
The adapter connects only to the earth connection of a properly grounded wall outlet. The grounding product itself does not use active electricity.
How Do You Know Your Grounding Sheet Is Working?
You don't need to physically feel anything for your grounding sheet to be connected correctly.
Some people notice sensations or changes when they first start grounding, while others don't feel anything obvious at all.
If you'd like to confirm the connection, the sheet can be checked using a multimeter or grounding tester.
The Simplest Way to Remember It
Put it on the mattress, place your normal fitted sheet over the top, connect the grounding cord, and sleep normally.
Your usual bedding and pyjamas are fine.
Keep Your Normal Bedding
Our Premium Grounding Underlays sit beneath your normal fitted sheet, so you can stay grounded without changing the way you sleep.
