Why Red Lens Blue Light Blocking Clip-Ons Matter at Night
We live in a world surrounded by artificial light. From evening Netflix and late-night emails to scrolling on phones and sitting under bright LED lighting, many of us are exposed to stimulating light long after the sun has gone down. The problem is that our brain interprets this light as daytime.
Blue light is a short-wavelength, high-energy form of visible light, typically ranging from around 380–500 nanometres (nm). During the day, blue light helps promote alertness and focus. At night, however, continued exposure suppresses melatonin — the hormone responsible for signalling that it’s time to sleep.
While phones, tablets, and computers are well-known sources of blue light, indoor lighting is often overlooked. Modern LED and fluorescent lights emit a significant amount of blue light, meaning your eyes and nervous system may still be exposed to sleep-disrupting wavelengths right up until bedtime.
How Red Lens Blue Light Blocking Clip-Ons Work
Red lens blue light blocking clip-ons are designed specifically for night-time use. Unlike amber or yellow lenses, which only reduce part of the blue spectrum, red lenses block 100% of blue light (400–500nm) along with a large portion of green light (up to ~550nm) — the wavelengths most strongly associated with circadian rhythm disruption.
By removing these stimulating frequencies entirely, only longer, warmer wavelengths are allowed to reach your eyes. This closely mimics the natural light environment after sunset and helps signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down.
When blue and green light are fully blocked:
Melatonin production can resume naturally
Visual stimulation is reduced
Eye strain from screens and indoor lighting is minimised
The body begins preparing for sleep rather than alertness
Designed for Night-Time Use Over Your Existing Glasses
These red lens clip-ons attach easily over prescription or reading glasses, offering a practical alternative to full-frame blue light blocking glasses. They’re ideal for evening use when watching TV, using a phone or laptop, or spending time under bright indoor lighting.
Because they clip directly onto your existing eyewear, there’s no need to switch between multiple pairs of glasses — making them a simple, effective addition to your nightly wind-down routine.

Usage Guide
Put them on 1–2 hours before bedtime or as soon as the sun goes down and your home fills with artificial light.
Keep the glasses on until all lights and screens are turned off and you’re ready for bed.
Fit Over Sleep Glasses can also be used during the day, especially when spending long periods in front of digital devices.
Remove them occasionally during the day to give your body a break from thinking it’s still nighttime.
For extended daytime use, our Daytime Blue Light Glasses are more suitable.
Lens testing
Below is a test being done using a spectrometer in front of a laptop screen. You can see how quickly the spike in blue light drops when using one of our sleep glasses.
The spectrometer loads it’s readings in 4 second intervals. All our lens colors are tested to ensure optimal performance over over brands.

There is a unit called the abbe value which refers to optical clarity, the higher value the more clarity of the lens. Most cheaper anti blue light glasses on the market have a very reflective blue coating and are made with PC (Polycarbonate) which are rated as the lowest optical clarity of lens material available. Below are the differences in value –
CR-39 – 58
PC (Polycarbonate) – 30
Urban Hippee’s CR-39 lens have anti reflective coating and have almost double the clarity of others available on the market. They have been tested to block up to 100% harmful blue light from 400nm to 550nm.
We designed fit-over sleep glasses that can work with most reading glasses. They simply go over the top of your reading glasses. We only have amber lens available for this style. Click here to view the fitover blue light glasses.
Put on your red or amber colored lens glasses. If the blue circle color turns black, this will indicate that your glasses are effectively filtering all blue light.
